Dussehra festival is celebrated on the tenth day of the bright fortnight of Ashwin month. This festival symbolizes the victory of good over evil. On this day, Purushottam Lord Rama killed Ravana. In some places, the festival is known as Vijayadashami. According to legend, this festival is associated with the life of Mata Vijaya. Apart from this, some people celebrate this festival as Ayudha Puja (Shastra Puja).

Dussehra Muhurta

1. Dussehra festival is celebrated on the tenth day of the bright fortnight of Ashwin month. The period of this period would be from the tenth muhurat to the twelfth muhurta after sunrise.

2. If Dashami is for two days and only spreads on the second day, then Vijayadashami will be celebrated on the second day.

3. If Dashami is in the afternoon of two days, then the Dussehra festival will be celebrated on the first day.

4. If Dashami falls on both days, but not in the afternoon, this festival will be celebrated on the first day itself.


Shravan Nakshatra also affects the Muhurta of Dussehra, the facts of which are given below:


1. If Dashami Tithi falls on two days (whether in the afternoon or not) but Shravan Nakshatra falls in the afternoon of the first day, then the festival of Vijayadashami will be celebrated on the first day.

2. If Dashami Tithi falls on two days (whether in the afternoon or not) but Shravan Nakshatra falls in the afternoon of the second day, then the festival of Vijayadashami will be celebrated on the second day.

3. If Dashami Tithi falls on both the days, but the noonday is only on the first day then in that case the Dashami Tithi will be present for the first three Muhurats on the second day and the Shravan Nakshatra will be spread in the afternoon of the second day, then Dussehra festival will be celebrated on the second day.

4. If Dashami Tithi is in the afternoon of the first day and less than three Muhurats on the second day, then, in that case, the Vijayadashi festival will be celebrated on the first day itself. In this, any situation of Shravan Nakshatra will be dismissed.

Dussehra Puja & Festival

Aparajita Puja is performed in the afternoon. The method of this puja is given below:


1. When sunset occurs and some stars start appearing in the sky, this period is called Vijay Muhurta. Performing any puja or work at this time gives good results. It is said that Lord Shriram started the war in this Muhurta to defeat the evil Ravana. At this time, a tree named Shami took the form of a bow called Gandiva of Arjuna.
2. Dussehra day is considered to be one of the holiest days of the year. It is one of the three and a half Muhurats (the most auspicious time of the year - Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, Ashwin Shukla Dashmi, Vaishakh Shukla Tritiya, and Kartik Shukla Pratipada (half Muhurta)). This period is perfect for starting anything. However, certain Muhurta may also be for particular worship.
3. Kshatriyas, warriors, and soldiers worship their weapons on this day; This pooja is also known as Ordnance / Arms worship. They also worship Shami on this day. In ancient times, this worship was considered to be the main form of Kshatriya for the monarchy.
4. Brahmins worship Mother Saraswati on this day.
5. Vaishyas worship their books.
6. Navratri Ramlila, which takes place in many places, also ends today.
7. The victory of Lord Rama is celebrated by burning effigies of Ravana, Kumbhakarna and Meghnath.
8. It is believed that it is considered very sacred to source the aparajita of Mother Bhagwati Jagadamba.
9. In Bengal, the festival of Maa Durga Puja is celebrated in grand form.

Story of Dussehra

According to mythological belief, this festival got its name Dussehra because on this day Lord Purushottam Rama killed the ten-headed Atavayi Ravana. Since then, the ten-headed effigy of Ravana is lit every year on the day of Dussehra as a symbol to destroy our inner anger, greed, confusion, intoxication, jealousy, selfishness, injustice, inhumanity and arrogance.

According to the legend of Mahabharata, Duryodhana defeated the Pandavas in gambling. As per the condition, the Pandavas had to remain in exile for 12 years, while for a year they also had to remain in exile. He was to remain hidden from everyone during the exile and if anyone found him, he would have to face the brunt of 12 years of exile again. For this reason, Arjuna hid his Gandiv Dhanush for that one year on a tree called Shami and started working as a pseudonym of a Brahmanla for King Virat. Once the son of that king asked Arjuna for help to protect his cow, Arjuna defeated his enemies by withdrawing his bow from the shami tree.

• According to another legend, when Lord Shri Ram started his journey to climb Lanka, the Shami tree declared him victorious.
